Public art project proposal for a site in Long Beach, California of massive scale and complexity in industrial transit systems: a concrete rail viaduct floating over train tracks; a wide and empty riverbed; large boulevards packed with a constant flow of tractor units; freeway bridges within view.
My intuitive response to this large, loud and heavy environment was to create a series of sculptures that could add beauty and grace while balancing the weight of the context: urban scale flowers - soft, colorful, romantic, inviting. Roses are powerfully emotive, elegant, and more volumetric/fuller than many other flowers. They hold the cognitive ability to recall the memories of rich and meaningful moments in our lives: weddings, birthdays, special occasions.
To further augment the surreal romanticism and obliterate the noisy lifelessness of the surroundings, the flowers would emit opera arias.
