Murals at Kester Elementary in Van Nuys, CA (16’ wide x 12’ tall) to motivate kids to play sports! The design had to incorporate the horizontal half-line and the three lower boxes that were already there.
The original designs, referencing the history of the handball sport and the Olympics, were simplified upon request and the handballs changed to dodgeballs as the kids play a mixture of the sports.
I designed and drew the murals and then UCLA student volunteers did the first pass of painting the shapes in with colors I mixed for them. I later returned to finish them, adding a second coat, finishing or changing shape outlines, and doing the white linework that helps the forms pop-out.
This was a volunteer project through L.A. Works. As the kids love them, they play on them quite a lot, and if you go there you will see two very dirty walls!
