Public art project proposal for a temporary interactive sculpture, for the GLOW festival in Santa Monica, that hightlights the experience of being on the beach, at night, entrenched in a world of color.
Rather than create an object for staring at, this sculpture - a 30’ x 50’ maze of ordered colored fabric lit with un-ordered, contrasting colored lights - interacts both with its context - the ocean breezes that move it and the sand it gently hovers over - and with people as they figure out a way to get through. Specific cut-out views out to the sky, the ocean, and the city focus on the experience of place.
The maze sits directly on the pedestrian wood path, so that entering it is part of the natural flow. As people meander through it on and off the path, tactile attention is called to the softness of the sand.
The entire structure is recyclable and has been engineered. It fits within the $2,500 material budget.
Design and cost analysis: Ioana Urma. Structural engineering: Radu Urma.
