Caricat-ura/ă was an interactive political art project symbolically conceived for the December 2009 commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Romania.

The project consists of full body scale portraits of the former dictator and his wife, designed so they can easily be distributed through the internet and printed, in pieces, on simple printers. Also provided are headshots, smaller drawings, and a few interpretations.

The name, “caricat-ura/ă” is a play on words: “caricatura/ă” means “the/a caricature” in Romanian. Separately, “ura” means “hooray,” while “ură” means “hatred.” It’s a play on words related to the fact that after 20 years some people have forgotten the evil/suffering that they caused and have grown a romantic nostalgia for the couple. The project was thus open ended. It simply handed the former dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife, Elena, over to “the people,” letting them decide what to do with them.

A supportive article “Ceaușescu regretat și Ceaușescu printat” was published in the revolutionary Romanian political satire newspaper Academia Cațavencu, by one of the paper’s founders, Ioan T. Morar.
