two kilometer project
This 2 kilometer long mixed-use project - consisting of retail, theater, educational, museum/exhibition, office, hotel, residential spaces - ties together and activates an otherwise solemn, disconnected, and isolated downtown urban district.
Ioana Urma worked on this project at The Jerde Partnership, in the competition and concept design phases, as part of the Core Design Team, on the design of the whole, and also specifically on the large shell tower, the theaters, the park link, the aquarium, and on sustainable initiatives.
This project rolled at super-high speed and involved a huge team of talented consultants: museum exhibit/programming, landscape, water feature, lighting, parking, and structural, to name a few. Ioana was lucky to work on the design of the theaters with the highly experienced Randy Jefferson (Frank Gehry’s former partner) as consultant.
The most difficult aspects of the project were programming the long space so as to attract people to come and stay inside it, and coordinating with the complex existing context of numerous tower buildings, which the project was connecting. Parking was also difficult, because the project area is surrounded by immensely large one way streets.
